The Challenge

Customize and completely transform the Intranet application of a Leading Tax Advisory Firm (Accountancy and Legal Advisors) running on Microsoft SharePoint Server 2007, that was not being optimally used by the organization’s employees.

To give the Intranet application interface (developed on the SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS) and SQL Server 2005 a swanky new look and interactive functionalities to make it:

Technical Details

We have customized the Intranet Portal using the Publishing Site Template, Team Site, My Site, Search functionality, Announcement, Survey and Blog site templates to cater to different requirements of the application. We have given different access rights to the various departments and hierarchy in the organization. Also, we have automated the approval process of the documents using the SharePoint workflow feature.

Templates we have used

Publishing Site Template

We have extensively used the publishing site template that gives controlling hierarchy to the authority for approving changes made in content of the intranet pages.

When changes are approved by those who have permission for approval, the changes are reflected to all users and the page is published.

Most pages in the intranet are publishing pages requiring approval from the respective admin.

Team Site

This custom Sharepoint development application is of great use to the Human Resources & Corporate Communication departments who use the team site template for sharing documents between different team members of the organization.

Documents uploaded in the document library are visible on the pages in the Content Editor and Page Viewer & Data View webparts.

Blog Site

A module of the Intranet portal specially created for the HR department to invite views of employees regarding various issues. The module encourages discussion and collaboration between employees and uses the blog site template for the functionality.

Announcement

This module allows announcement of current events in the organization. The announcement template has been programmed in a way so as to allow old events to expire automatically.

Survey

The Survey template is used for taking surveys from time to time of the company’s employees on important issues that affect them.

Search Cente

The search center site template is used for searching employees from Active Directory.

Search Center with Tabs

The search center with tabs functionality is used for crawling the content database and searching documents in the site collection.

Custom Master Pages Deployment

For implementing a consistent look and feel to the site (including common header, footer and navigation) we deployed custom master pages to the master page library which are being used by the entire site under the web application.

Intranet Portal Branding

We have created a custom CSS library and used JQuery extensively in Sharepoint web development to make the web pages interactive and provide a consistent, user-friendly and appealing look & feel to the Intranet.

Workflow

The custom workflow for the intranet portal was created to automate the document approval process at different stages and send mail to the approver and creator.

Widgets

In the Sharepoint Intranet application we have incorporated widgets so that their updates are available in the intranet itself so that the employees do not need to surf multiple sites for useful information.
